How it works
What makes this work, work, can be understood through four principles for transforming stuckness in life into paths with real purpose:
- The body is a doorway to a larger self understanding. Before verbal language comes in, our body is at least as intelligent as any other animal, and is constantly trying to fulfill our core physical and emotional needs. When you really pay attention to the body's inner-languages of sensation, emotion, and imagery, you gain profound insight into the unconscious motivations that are fielding your conscious choices, and gain far more choice.
- Bring a lamp into the darkness. This principle comes out of Somatic Experiencing (SE), a body-based approach for resolving trauma. SE shows that by steeping in positive experiences within your body, you're able to venture further into dark and painful feelings without losing your way. When you take where you're stuck on a issue, and meet it with an inner lamp of compassion, you create space for the problem to move forward in unforeseen ways.
- Truly feeling Anger and Grief is transformative. When you are able to embrace and embody the anger that you feel about situations in your life that you don't like, you generate the inner clarity and momentum to act and do what's needed. Similarly, by compassionately noticing grief and the barriers between you and feeling it, you open the gates to tears and sorrow that when freed, also free you to experience those aspects of your life you'd been missing or running from.
- Processing thoughts and feelings in relationship is a fundamental human need. Without regular contact with other supportive beings, everything is harder, and when everything is hard it's easy to blame ourselves for not being good enough. The truth is that you just need help, that we all need help, from each other. That is what a human being is meant to be: a social, communal, being.
With these four principles working together, navigating world-weary pain becomes not only practical, but a regular source of feeling inspired and alive.
